What is STCW & Why Do We Need It?
STCW Insights: your definitive guide to understanding the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW). In the maritime industry, safety, efficiency, and compliance with international laws are not just goals but necessities. It is crucial because it guarantees that all personnel on ships have undergone rigorous training, particularly in safety procedures, pollution prevention, and survival techniques. This standardisation not only enhances the safety of seafarers but also protects the marine environment and maritime infrastructure by ensuring competent and well-prepared personnel are aboard vessels navigating the world’s waters.

What does the practical training involve?
The main practical training involves:
Personal Survival Techniques
This module teaches seafarers how to survive at sea in the event of an emergency. Trainees learn how to use life-saving appliances, practice survival techniques in water, and get trained on how to use lifeboats and liferafts. This often involves drills in a swimming pool or open water to simulate real-life scenarios.
Fire Prevention and Firefighting
A critical part of the training involves learning to prevent and fight fires on board. Trainees undergo live-fire drills where they use firefighting equipment such as fire extinguishers, hoses, and breathing apparatus. This module covers everything from the theory of combustion to practical firefighting strategies and search and rescue operations within smoke-filled environments.
Elementary First Aid
Seafarers are trained in basic first aid techniques to manage medical emergencies until professional medical help is available. This includes CPR, wound care, managing shock, and other emergency procedures. The hands-on training ensures that all crew members can provide crucial initial care in a medical emergency.
